Tired of Talent?

Over the past decade consultants have been convincing companies that there is a “war for talent”. In this war, we have been told that talent needs to be given what it wants and that companies need to go to extraordinary lengths to provide talent with all the flexibility and freedom it desires. This article argues that talent is crucial for business success, but that the current focus and direction being taken is detrimental to businesses and society. A paradigm shifts is required. I argue that the key to building a “Talented Company” is the belief that having the right systems, procedures, values and supportive culture makes people smart, and not the other way around. Talent management needs to focus on making the star system before it can make star players. A number of companies are getting this right. These talented companies create a culture where people’s passions and energies can be engaged, optimized and directed in the right direction. Talented companies do not stand and fall on the back of a few talented individuals but rather benefit from the collective sum of tribes of talent imbedded within the culture of their business. Talent cannot reach it’s fullest potential if it doesn’t operate in a talented environment.

Do you work for a star company?

I’m on a quest to find companies that are extraordinary, companies that not only achieve financial growth results but more importantly contribute positively to society as a whole. I’m intrigued at how many companies have fallen off the rail – how the mighty have fallen – in the past few years it has become apparent that a number of very talented people have been behaving badly. Talent has become arrogant! After a decade during which the war for talent has been waged, companies have convinced themselves that they need the best of the best and that they need to be rewarding talented individual excessively. This piece of research which is forming the basis of a new book is not about talented people but rather about how by creating talented structures, organisational design, cultures, systems and corporate DNA you can create star companies.
If you would like to contribute or participate in my research I’d love to hear from you. Please contact me by email or by phone +44 7525 160 964

The financial crisis and recession has provided a glut of excellent new content. In my business laboratory I have been researching and developing two powerful new presentations. Talent Reboot shows us why it is now more important than ever to focus on creating a star company rather than star players and; Brave New World shows us what we can learn from a historically repeating 80-year cycle and reveals the realities of the new world of work for your leadership, talent management and customer strategies
